A master of German Expressionism, between 1920 and 1924 Dix, under the influence of Grosz, produced a work which eloquently expresses his anti-militarism and disgust with war, imbued with both pathos and vivid violence. <\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a43d21b e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"a43d21b\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cd4160c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cd4160c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe 50 etchings on display at the Historial belong to one of the rare original box sets of <em>Der Krieg<\/em> (The War) to have survived intact. Regarded as a \u201cdegenerate artist\u201d by the Nazis, almost all of the 70 copies of the set published at Berlin in 1924 by Karl Nierendorf were destroyed in the 1930s.\n\nIn 2021, the Historial acquired the 51<sup>st<\/sup> etching: \u2018Soldat und Nonne, Vergewaltgung\u2019! This piece, which was originally intended for inclusion in <em>Der Krieg<\/em>, was withdrawn by the publisher on account of its challenging content. <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">\n<\/span>This 51<sup>st<\/sup> etching deals with a taboo subject: a German soldier is shown raping a nun, easily identifiable by her head dress. Otto Dix wanted to show the suffering, injury and death that afflicted his comrades, at a time when the rise of the Nazi party was increasing the risk of another major conflict.<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-72cebd5 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"72cebd5\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-009c1e9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"009c1e9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The cycle is inspired by Goya\u2019s Disasters of War series, and evokes the difficulty of forgetting the horrors endured in wartime: \u201cthe fact is that, as a young man, you don\u2019t realise how profoundly you have been marked by it all. For at least ten years I used to dream about crawling through ruined houses, (seriously), through corridors so narrow I could barely get through. My dreams were always full of ruins&#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These etchings explores a variety of macabre themes, forming an abominable chronicle of combat. Destruction, damage and mutilated bodies are shown in murky chiaroscuro, creating an apocalyptic atmosphere. Many of these scenes of death and desolation are set in the Somme or elsewhere in Picardy, where Otto Dix served.<\/p>\n<p>Otto Dix shows no indulgence towards the soldiers he depicts, his former comrades-in-arms. Far from celebrating acts of heroism, he emphasises the destructive savagery of war. The artist devoted much of his career to bearing witness to the deleterious effects of war on people, nature and our shared heritage. In 1933 the Nazis removed Dix from his teaching position at the Academy in Dresden. His works were included in the infamous exhibition of \u201cdegenerate art\u201d<em>(Entartete Kunst)<\/em>, and much of his oeuvre was destroyed.
